Dear Parents or Guardians,
Invite your family members to dig out the family photo album and dust off their family stories—we’re beginning an exciting family history writing project!
The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration invites students to discover, write, and share stories about their family’s history. For detailed information, see www.TheGrannieAnnie.org. Briefly, this is how it works:
November – December: Students interview family storykeepers to learn about their family’s history.
January – February 14: Students write a story about something they learned from their family's history, then revise, edit, and submit their story to The Grannie Annie.
February 14 – April: Stories are celebrated locally. On April 1, authors of stories selected for publication in the next volume of Grannie Annie are announced. Your child could become a published author!
May: The new volume of Grannie Annie arrives! (Pre-order your copies in April, at www.TheGrannieAnnie.org.)
As the year progresses, your child may need your help with these steps:
- Identify your family’s storykeepers. (Who likes to talk about the old days?)
- Choose an interview topic that interests your child and the storykeeper.
- Arrange for an interview with the storykeeper and prepare interview questions.
- Identify follow-up questions and research details that could enrich your child’s story.
- Complete and sign The Grannie Annie Official Entry Form and return it to school, or submit your child’s story with entry form directly to The Grannie Annie.
- Share your child’s story with your family and community.
- Celebrate the children’s stories at school.
The Grannie Annie encourages young people to discover and save their family stories. Participants have the opportunity to strengthen relationships with family members, understand themselves better, polish their writing skills, and deepen their interest in history. Thank you for helping your child take part in this special project!
Sincerely,
Your child’s teacher
